The mother of a young woman who tragically lost her life after being shot by her father in his residence in the United States has officially lodged a complaint with the American police department overseeing the incident.
Lucy Harrison, a 23-year-old from Warrington, Cheshire, was fatally shot by her father, Kris, on January 10 last year while visiting his home in Prosper, Texas, accompanied by her boyfriend, Sam Littler.
Although the circumstances surrounding the shooting were investigated by a grand jury, they concluded that there was insufficient evidence to press charges against Kris. This legal body of citizens assesses potential criminal behavior and determines if there is adequate evidence to prosecute a suspect.
The firearm used in the incident was legally owned by Harrison in Texas, where state law did not mandate a license or training for owning it for self-defense purposes. Following an inquiry at Cheshire Coroner’s Court, it was determined that Lucy’s death was unlawful.
During the investigation, Mr. Harrison admitted to consuming alcohol on the day of the incident, although no breathalyzer or blood alcohol tests were conducted by the authorities.
The case was officially closed by US police in June 2025. However, a year later, Lucy’s mother Jane Coates from Warrington filed a formal complaint with the Prosper Police Department on June 10, expressing concerns about the thoroughness of the investigation and advocating for a potential reopening of the case.
Jane emphasized that her primary focus is on the quality of the police inquiry, highlighting what she perceives as discrepancies in the investigation process. She particularly questioned the speed at which authorities dismissed the possibility of pressing charges, noting that crucial aspects such as medical examinations were seemingly overlooked.
Furthermore, Jane raised doubts about the adequacy of investigating Kris’ alcohol consumption on the day of the incident, as he was the sole witness alive to Lucy’s death. She expressed discontent with the weight given to his account and the lack of thorough examination of his role in the tragedy.
Jane’s formal complaint awaits acknowledgment by the Prosper Police Department. In memory of her daughter, she has initiated a campaign named For Luce, aiming to support families navigating foreign justice systems and advocating for improved procedures and support.
Reflecting on her daughter’s untimely death, Jane lamented the loss of Lucy’s potential and emphasized the need for change and better support for families in similar situations.
Prosper Police Department has been contacted for a response.
