Specialized law enforcement officers combating organized crime have assisted in apprehending over a thousand suspected individuals involved in sexual offenses, a recent report has unveiled.
Methods typically utilized to apprehend criminal masterminds have been applied to pedophiles and domestic abusers, resulting in 1,393 arrests, the protection of 1,351 children, and the sentencing of offenders to a total of 1,487 years in prison.
Regional organized crime units (ROCUs) have expanded their focus beyond drug trafficking, violence, money laundering, and firearms offenses to prioritize safeguarding vulnerable members of society.
Recent convictions include Declan Sains, 28, who received an eight-year and three-month prison sentence for engaging in illicit online communications with a minor and producing indecent images of children.
Another individual, Rhys Meikle, 31, was sentenced to four years in Manchester Crown Court after pleading guilty to facilitating child sexual offenses and distributing illicit images of minors.
Chief Constable Trevor Rodenhurst, leading the National Police Chiefs’ Council for ROCUs, emphasized the rapid evolution of organized crime, particularly in utilizing digital platforms to target vulnerable individuals. He praised the adaptability of ROCUs in countering these evolving threats and safeguarding communities.
Deputy Chief Constable Wendy Gunney, the lead for national Serious and Organized Crime (SOC), highlighted the importance of recognizing vulnerability in investigations and protecting victims from exploitation by organized criminals. The effectiveness of ROCUs in combating SOC and their vital role in addressing violence against women, girls, and online exploitation were underscored.
Established in 2013, ROCUs have expanded into a national network comprising approximately 4,000 officers and staff, collaborating with the National Crime Agency to implement advanced investigative techniques in support of local law enforcement agencies.
Over the last year, ROCUs have apprehended 4,363 suspects, secured 7,242 years of prison sentences, safeguarded 2,259 children and 823 adults, and made 1,492 drug and firearms-related arrests.
The units have confiscated 95 firearms, 652 rounds of ammunition, along with significant quantities of illicit substances, including cocaine, heroin, and cannabis.
