In a disturbing incident, a smiling murderer headbutted a law enforcement officer during his apprehension for killing an elderly man at his home. Franklin Agbotui, aged 79, was fatally assaulted by Phillip Fraczek, then 20, after confronting him for loitering near elderly residents’ apartments.

Fraczek was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years for inflicting severe injuries on the “kind and gentle” Mr. Agbotui in the assault that occurred in East London on May 15, 2024. The assailant, who was out on bail for a prior incident, had broken into a residence and made threatening gestures towards two young women.

Footage from police body cameras captures the moment when officers apprehended Fraczek, who tauntingly questioned their actions before violently assaulting one officer. Earlier, Fraczek had fallen asleep outside Agbotui’s flat and later clashed with the victim after being awakened by him.

The victim, Mr. Agbotui, succumbed to his injuries five days after the brutal attack, leaving behind a scene of destruction in his flat. Fraczek, a Polish national, was eventually subdued by police officers, with incriminating evidence linking him to the crime scene.

Fraczek, now 22 years old, received a life sentence with a minimum term of 20 years and four months for his crimes, including the assault on an emergency worker. The family of the deceased expressed profound loss and noted the positive impact their father had on their lives and community.

Detective Superintendent Kelly Allen highlighted the victim’s peaceful nature and successful past, condemning Fraczek’s senseless violence that shattered the tranquility of their neighborhood. The officers involved in Fraczek’s arrest were commended for their bravery in capturing the perpetrator swiftly and securing crucial evidence.

The focus remains on providing support to Mr. Agbotui’s loved ones, with the hope that the significant sentence imposed on Fraczek may offer them some solace during this difficult time.
