Christian Turner reportedly expressed disdain for the term “special relationship” when referring to UK-US ties, describing it as outdated and burdened with historical connotations. Despite this, Turner acknowledged the deep historical and intertwined defense and security connections between the UK and the US.
The leaked remarks come at a delicate time for US-UK relations, already strained by fallout from the Iran conflict. Additionally, King Charles’ ongoing state visit to America adds to the sensitivity of the situation. The Foreign Office clarified that Turner’s comments, made during a private event with UK students in Washington DC, do not reflect the official stance of the UK Government.
Turner was also reported to have discussed the potential crisis surrounding the appointment of his predecessor, Peter Mandelson, and the impact it had on Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership. Furthermore, he delved into the Labour Party rulebook’s provisions for removing a Prime Minister, highlighting the challenges faced by the opposition compared to the Tories. Turner speculated on the possible scenarios that could lead to Starmer stepping down.
