The brother-in-law of the late Princess of Wales insists that his family requires heightened security measures due to their public status amidst a dispute over a footpath adjacent to their £15 million property. Pippa, Kate’s sister, is married to James Matthews, a hedge fund executive, and they reside at Barton Court in West Berkshire with their three children.

Matthews recently installed an electric gate on the property’s driveway, leading to a disagreement with the West Berkshire Ramblers group, who sought legal recognition of a public footpath on the estate. Following an investigation by the West Berkshire District Council, it was determined that the footpath claim was valid based on established evidence and legal guidelines.

In a recent inquiry, Matthews defended the gate installation, emphasizing the need for enhanced security for his family, citing their high profile. He explained that the gate remains closed for security purposes, with occasional exceptions for family visits. Matthews also highlighted the minimal use of the route, noting that few individuals have been seen walking along it.

Statements from locals and former estate managers supported the historical use of the footpath, questioning the recent restrictions imposed by the current property owners. The ongoing inquiry at Kintbury Coronation Hall aims to address the conflicting perspectives and legal principles surrounding the footpath dispute.

The Matthews’ spokesperson emphasized their right to ensure a safe environment for their children on private property, emphasizing the absence of a historically recognized public right of way on the land. The inquiry continues to explore the complexities of the situation, balancing security concerns with public access considerations.
