A 13-year-old boy named Toby Peart, residing in Strathpeffer, Scotland, recently underwent a groundbreaking surgery using state-of-the-art technology after experiencing pins and needles in his leg, initially mistaken for growing pains. Toby was among the first individuals in Scotland to benefit from a new robotic-assisted camera during his operation.
In April 2025, Toby started feeling pins and needles and pain in his left leg, which worsened progressively over several months. An MRI scan at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness revealed a brain tumor, leading to his referral to a specialized facility in Glasgow. The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow introduced a novel 3D exoscope technology to enhance precision in intricate brain surgeries.
Following further assessments confirming a non-cancerous tumor measuring approximately 13-14mm on the right side of his brain, Toby underwent surgery in November at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. The operation utilized the advanced 3D exoscope technology for improved accuracy during the procedure.
Acknowledging the exceptional care provided by the medical staff during his son’s treatment, Toby’s father, Marc, expressed gratitude for the innovative technology used in the surgery. Marc described the period as extremely challenging, highlighting Toby’s quiet nature and the sudden discovery of the brain tumor.
Post-surgery, Toby faced potential risks such as loss of sight or paralysis, but he displayed remarkable progress despite initial weakness and paralysis on his left side. Overcoming these challenges, Toby regained strength and mobility, eventually returning home a week after the surgery and resuming school in January.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde marked a milestone by installing the B Braun Aesculap Aeos 3D Robotic Assisted Exoscope, offering superior image quality, enhanced depth perception, and improved illumination. Consultant neurosurgeon Roddy O’Kane emphasized the benefits of this technology, enabling surgeons to operate more effectively and achieve better outcomes, particularly for pediatric patients undergoing brain surgery.
