Russia conducted airstrikes using guided aerial bombs in Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of three civilians, including two young girls aged five and ten. The attack targeted the city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine, coinciding with Kyiv’s deployment of drones for deep-strike missions inside Russia, specifically targeting the Wildberries e-commerce platform.
Eight guided aerial bombs were launched by Russia at Sumy, an area that has faced repeated attacks in recent times as Ukraine grapples with defending against air strikes. In the northern Sumy region of Ukraine, six Russian glide bombs caused casualties, including the deaths of three individuals, including the two young girls and an elderly woman. Additionally, Russian forces struck Kharkiv and 18 other locations across the northern region, resulting in one fatality and seven injuries, including an eight-year-old child.
As a response, Ukraine deployed 300 drones to target various cities and industrial sites throughout Russia. The latest drone attacks hit two major Wildberries logistics hubs near Moscow and St. Petersburg, bringing the total number of strikes on the online retailer to 20. Ukrainian authorities extended their targeting of Russia’s supply network, aiming to disrupt operations. A warehouse in an industrial zone in Chekhov, Moscow, was set ablaze during the attacks, resulting in casualties and damage.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky raised concerns about the overwhelming pressure on Ukraine’s air defenses, noting the critical need for anti-ballistic missile systems to protect civilians. Ukraine has urged the US to provide more Patriot missiles for defense against ballistic threats. While there were discussions about a potential license for Ukraine to manufacture its own Patriot missiles, it is unlikely to be finalized before winter, as per US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker. Whitaker emphasized the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities through potential co-production agreements with US manufacturers and European allies to support regional security.
