Buckingham Palace is gearing up for the task of finding a replacement for the King’s top aide, Sir Clive Alderton, who has served the Royal Household for two decades. Alderton, currently the principal private secretary to Prince Charles and Queen Camilla, will be stepping down next year upon reaching his 60th birthday in May 2027.

The search is now underway to fill this critical role responsible for overseeing the monarch’s official duties and providing essential counsel to the King and Queen. A robust recruitment process is set to commence to identify the best-suited candidates, both internally and externally, for this demanding position.

The incoming principal private secretary must possess a unique blend of skills, including constitutional knowledge, diplomatic experience, and utmost discretion. This individual will handle a wide array of tasks, from managing official engagements and communications to handling private matters on behalf of the monarch, as outlined on the Royal Family’s website.

Key requirements for the role also include comprehensive understanding of the UK’s politics, history, and culture, along with familiarity with the other 14 realms where the King serves as head of state. Furthermore, expertise in the Church of England and military affairs is essential due to the sovereign’s roles in these areas.

The position demands adeptness in navigating sensitive family issues with discretion, showcasing the personal nature of the role. Sir Clive, who currently receives an annual remuneration package of around £300,000, has been a prominent figure within the Royal Household, notably guiding the King through significant events and personal challenges.

As the primary figure behind the scenes, the principal private secretary plays a pivotal role in managing the monarch’s public life, engagements, speeches, and overall advisory duties. This position is considered one of the most critical within the Royal Household, with the incumbent often seen alongside the King at various events.

Former royal correspondent Valentine Low has highlighted the integral role of the royal staff members, emphasizing their responsibilities in organizing public appearances, advising on policies, and being constant companions to the royals. Sir Clive’s departure marks a significant transition within the Royal Household, prompting the start of a new chapter as the search for his successor unfolds.
