A man described as seeking attention went to a school in Heywood, Greater Manchester, armed with a hammer, a hatchet, and a kitchen knife, resulting in a two-year jail sentence. Both Douk Deng, a 21-year-old South Sudanese national, was apprehended by workmen at Edgar Wood Academy on August 6 last year.

Prior to his arrest, a member of the public alerted authorities after observing Deng acting strangely while carrying a petrol can with a hammer fastened to his belt. Deng was seen circling the closed school, scanning the premises before approaching it. Builders on site noticed his behavior, prompting them to contact the police.

CCTV footage released by Greater Manchester Police captured Deng causing property damage at the school and engaging with workmen. Upon police intervention, Deng was subdued and found in possession of a hammer, a hatchet, a kitchen knife, and a jerry can of petrol.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Deng, an asylum seeker, felt neglected by immigration authorities and resorted to drastic actions to draw attention to his situation. Despite having a family, Deng faced challenges in the UK due to language barriers and limited work opportunities.

Deng pleaded guilty to various charges, including criminal damage and possessing weapons in public places and on school premises. He received a two-year prison sentence, with the requirement to serve half of the term in custody and the remainder on license.

The judge emphasized the need for the Home Office to address Deng’s status given his circumstances as a failed asylum seeker. Detectives found no specific motive or intent behind Deng’s actions, and Chief Superintendent Helen Caldbeck praised the officers for their swift response in ensuring public safety during the incident.
