A motorist hit speeds of 100mph while attempting to evade law enforcement in a harrowing 45-minute pursuit across Salford.
The Greater Manchester Police shared video footage of the chase, where officers trailed a Nissan Qashqai around 10:30 am as it raced along 30mph roads, swerving onto sidewalks and driving against traffic, forcing other vehicles to swerve out of the way.
Authorities stated that the driver was observed exhibiting dangerous and erratic driving behavior at high velocities and failed to stop when signaled by officers, prompting the pursuit.
A helicopter and 10 police vehicles joined the pursuit as the Nissan accelerated to speeds of up to 100mph, maneuvering through Salford, traveling along the East Lancashire Road, driving against traffic, and even passing through an underground supermarket parking lot.
The pursuit concluded after deploying a stinger device, leading to the apprehension of a 36-year-old man on charges of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and failing to stop. He is currently in police custody for interrogation.
Following a collision between the suspect’s vehicle and another car, a woman was hospitalized with minor injuries, while an officer sustained a hand injury during the stinger deployment.
Police Sergeant Neil Molloy from the Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit emphasized the extreme peril posed by such reckless driving, expressing gratitude that no severe injuries resulted from the incident. He commended the swift and professional actions of the officers in bringing the pursuit to a safe resolution, making an arrest, and seizing the vehicle.
The GMP’s official statement noted that officers engaged in a high-speed pursuit of a Nissan Qashqai reaching speeds of up to 100mph on Salford’s 30mph streets. The pursuit, initiated after the driver failed to comply with a stop signal, lasted approximately 45 minutes, involving helicopters and 10 police vehicles.
During the event, the vehicle navigated the East Lancashire Road, drove against traffic at roundabouts, and traversed a functioning underground supermarket parking area in daylight hours. The pursuit ended with the successful deployment of a stinger, leading to the arrest of the 36-year-old driver on several charges. An officer was also hospitalized due to a hand injury sustained during the incident.
