Golfer Rory McIlroy is currently taking a brief respite at his new residence in the UK before gearing up for the US Open. Ranked as the world’s No. 2 player, McIlroy recently participated in the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, securing a tie for 12th place.
Following his performance in Ohio, the 37-year-old golfer achieved a commendable four under par score as he prepares for the upcoming US Open, the third major tournament of the year. However, McIlroy has opted out of participating in the Canadian Open this week to return to his newly acquired mansion in the UK.
Having traveled 3,650 miles from Ohio to Wentworth, McIlroy is taking advantage of a six-day stay at his lavish Surrey estate before embarking on another approximately 3,500-mile journey to Southampton, New York, for the prestigious US Open at Shinnecock Hills.
McIlroy’s decision to spend quality time at his family home in the UK means he will miss out on the chance to compete in the Canadian Open, which offers a substantial £7.3 million prize pool, with the winner set to receive £1.3 million.
In a recent statement, McIlroy shared, “I had a couple of weeks off and we got ourselves settled into our house in London for the summer. It was nice to be there for the last 10 days.” The golfer and his wife, Erica Stoll, have been renovating their £9 million mansion, which was already a luxurious property before their enhancements. The couple, along with their daughter Poppy, have relocated from Florida to their new UK residence.
Previously residing in a £16.5 million mansion in Jupiter, Florida, purchased from golf icon Ernie Els in 2017, McIlroy and Stoll now find themselves in a neighborhood with notable figures like Elton John and Cliff Richard. However, their new surroundings also include the Sultan of Brunei, who boasts a staggering net worth of £22.3 billion.
Despite facing challenges with driver consistency this season, McIlroy remains optimistic about his performance at the upcoming US Open. Looking ahead to the tournament at Shinnecock Hills, McIlroy expressed his determination to keep improving each day to secure a second major title this season.
