A British man has been reported missing in a popular holiday destination in Portugal, prompting a search operation. The 23-year-old was last seen swimming at Peneco Beach in southern Portugal with a 19-year-old compatriot. While the younger man was able to safely exit the water unassisted, the 23-year-old remains unaccounted for at sea.
Efforts are underway with expert divers and law enforcement officials actively searching for the missing individual. The National Maritime Authority, in a statement on Facebook, disclosed that search operations were temporarily ceased for the night without locating the victim. Various teams, including maritime police, lifeguards, and volunteer firefighters, were involved in the search.
The search has been suspended for the night and will resume the following morning. The 19-year-old companion, who managed to leave the water and seek help, has been confirmed to be in good physical condition and has declined medical attention. The British Embassy in Portugal has been engaged to support the relatives of the missing individual and provide assistance to the 19-year-old.
