Families residing in makeshift tent settlements throughout the Gaza Strip are facing a relentless challenge of dealing with swarms of rodents and pests, causing distress among parents who report their children being targeted during the night.

The situation, described as unbearable, has displaced families struggling as their temporary dwellings are infested with rodents thriving in heaps of waste and untreated sewage.

One mother, Samah al-Daabla, recounted a horrifying incident when her four-year-old daughter was bitten by a weasel while asleep. She described waking up to her daughter’s screams in the middle of the night, only to find her hand covered in blood after the attack.

The young girl, Mayaseen, required urgent medical attention, including a tetanus shot, and endured days of illness before recovering in the family’s tent.

Aid organizations have issued warnings that the crisis is escalating, with the camps now described as breeding grounds for diseases, as highlighted in a recent survey referenced by UN agencies, which reported rodents or pests in 80% of displacement sites, affecting approximately 1.45 million individuals.

Experts attribute the surge in infestations to the breakdown of infrastructure, leading to unsanitary conditions with waste accumulation and sewage seeping into overcrowded camp areas.

Dr. Reinhilde Van De Weert from the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the outbreak was an anticipated consequence of the deteriorating living environment.

Parents are struggling to ensure the safety of their children, with sleep becoming a luxury due to the constant threat of rodent attacks. Rizq Abu Laila emphasized the distressing situation, highlighting the abnormal proliferation of weasels and rats causing havoc in the camps.

The dire state of Gaza’s infrastructure, largely destroyed amid ongoing conflicts, has hindered reconstruction efforts, leaving families exposed in tents surrounded by debris.

Humanitarian groups are sounding the alarm about an impending public health crisis, as rodents pose a significant risk of transmitting diseases through bites, droppings, and fleas. The WHO reported over 111,500 cases of diseases linked to infestations this year alone, underscoring the urgent need for waste clearance and sanitation system restoration.

Efforts to address the waste and rubble issues across Gaza are deemed crucial by Ettie Higgins of UNICEF, emphasizing the necessity for a comprehensive campaign.

As temperatures soar, concerns mount that the situation will deteriorate further, heightening the vulnerability of already at-risk families facing an escalating threat.

Hassan Al-Faqaawi lamented the living conditions, expressing the desperation felt due to the constant battle with fleas, mosquitoes, and rodents. Urgent intervention is required to alleviate the dire circumstances faced by the affected families in Gaza.
