A man faced life-threatening injuries following an explosion caused by a robot vacuum at his residence, with his mother disclosing more unsettling details of the event. Lachie Perrem, aged 25, sustained burns on 75% of his body when the vacuum device unexpectedly caught fire at his home on Airgate Close in Brabham, located in Perth’s northeast, on July 2. He was swiftly transported to Fiona Stanley Hospital and has since undergone multiple surgical procedures.

Post-explosion photos depicted shattered windows and charred walls, extending from the kitchen to the living room, where furniture was obliterated, floorboards scorched, and debris strewn across the house.

Fiona Perrem, his mother, shared additional information regarding the incident, stating: “He had a robo vac and unknowingly, the battery had a leak. When he commenced cooking, something ignited, leading to an explosion, with him at the epicenter.”

The malfunctioning device has been forwarded to the state’s building and energy office for a comprehensive investigation.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services in Western Australia emphasized the potential hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries commonly present in robot vacuums. A spokesperson highlighted the risks, stating that when lithium-ion batteries fail, they can undergo thermal runaway, resulting in violent bursting, hissing, release of toxic gases, and an intense fire.

Mr. Perrem has undergone three surgeries following the explosion, including procedures such as wound debridement and skin grafts on his fingers, left elbow, and torso. He experienced temporary voice loss and is anticipated to undergo further surgeries in the upcoming months.

An update posted on the GoFundMe page on July 20 by Ms. Perrem relayed positive news on Lachie’s recovery progress, mentioning successful graft healing and improved hand movement, along with the removal of his feeding tube. The update expressed gratitude for the ongoing support, care, and donations received.
