Football enthusiasts are projected to spend a record-breaking £3.8 billion during the upcoming World Cup event, with pubs alone anticipated to serve over 58 million pints. The unveiling of Thomas Tuchel’s 26-player England squad has ignited hopes among long-standing supporters, despite notable exclusions, while Scotland has already revealed its roster.

As the football extravaganza in the United States, Mexico, and Canada is set to commence in under three weeks, businesses in the UK are optimistic about reaping substantial sales. Website VoucherCodes.co.uk has estimated that expenditures during the 37-day tournament could reach £3.8 billion, contingent on the progress of England and Scotland. Chancellor Rachel Reeves stands to benefit from the potential economic boost resulting from the surge in spending.

This year’s projected spending surpasses the £2.75 billion spent during the 2024 Men’s Euros and the £2 billion uplift during the 2022 World Cup, which was impacted by its winter scheduling. Only the 2020 Euros tournament came close at £3.52 billion, fueled by heightened football excitement during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite an expected decrease in viewership due to late match start times, VoucherCodes.co.uk estimates that 34.9 million fans in the UK will tune in to watch the tournament from various locations throughout the five-week competition. The majority of spending is anticipated to occur in shops, especially supermarkets, with an estimated £2.9 billion in sales expected.

Moreover, pubs are poised to benefit from the sporting event, with a projected £900 million surge in revenue anticipated, accommodating 12.4 million spectators watching matches in pubs and similar establishments. Pubs are expected to be the preferred venue for 82% of surveyed individuals looking to watch games.

Over the tournament duration, fans are forecasted to consume 58.5 million pints of beer, equivalent to 11 Olympic size swimming pools, while an additional 3.5 million pints are predicted to be raised in celebration of goals. The British Beer and Pub Association forecasts that pubs could see an influx of £275 million, with an average pub selling an extra 1,240 pints.

Emma McClarkin, BBPA’s leader, emphasized the positive impact of the World Cup on pubs and brewers, encouraging support for local establishments and national teams. Supermarkets, on the other hand, are expected to lead in sales with an estimated worth of £1.95 billion, likely due to the match timings.

In addition to groceries, the report suggests significant spending on new electronics, team merchandise, clothing, and outdoor equipment. Late match schedules may lead to increased instances of absenteeism, with more than a quarter of fans considering taking a day off.
