A vaccine administered during pregnancy has resulted in an 80% decrease in hospital admissions of infants suffering from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) chest infections, as per health authorities. Over 20,000 infants were estimated to require hospitalization after contracting RSV, a condition that predominantly affects newborns and can lead to breathing difficulties and feeding challenges.

Since 2024, pregnant women have been receiving the vaccine starting from the 28th week of pregnancy to lower the incidence of RSV in newborns. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) highlighted that the vaccine provided significant protection to vulnerable infants.

RSV is a primary cause of infant hospitalizations before their first birthday, with babies under 6 months, premature infants, elderly adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems being at higher risk, according to the NHS. Nearly all children contract RSV before the age of 2, with severe cases necessitating hospitalization due to breathing issues.

Dr. Conall Watson, the RSV program lead at UKHSA, expressed concerns, emphasizing the importance of the vaccine in safeguarding newborns. The study revealed that timely administration of the vaccine, ideally four weeks before birth, offered around 85% protection. Substantial protection was still achievable with later administration closer to birth.

The study, involving around 300,000 English newborns from September 2024 to March of the following year, indicated that a significant number of hospitalizations were of unvaccinated infants. One mother shared her son’s experience of contracting RSV as a baby, causing severe complications, underscoring the importance of vaccination.

Dr. Watson stressed the vaccine’s potential to enhance infant safety during the winter months and encouraged pregnant women to consult healthcare providers about receiving the vaccine. While approximately 64% of pregnant women in England opt for the vaccine, the uptake is lower in London at 53%.
