In South Wales, police officers shot a man suspected of wielding a crossbow after responding to reports of threatening behavior at an address in St Edward Street, Newport, just before midnight on Friday.
The 21-year-old Newport man, who was seen with a weapon, was shot by officers and subsequently hospitalized. His condition is currently stable. Gwent Police spokesperson confirmed that specially-trained firearms officers were present at the scene due to the man’s possession of a crossbow.
Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McLain assured the public that the incident was isolated, with no ongoing risk to the community, and no further suspects are being sought. While firearm-related offenses are uncommon in Gwent, all reports of such incidents are taken seriously and handled professionally based on the perceived risk.
Gwent Police issued a statement detailing the events, urging anyone with relevant information, including CCTV footage, to contact them. They also mentioned reaching out to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for assessment as part of standard procedures.
