Ann Widdecombe was tragically murdered just before her scheduled television appearance, and her body remained undiscovered for a full day.

The former Conservative minister was brutally attacked in her home only 30 minutes before she was supposed to participate in a video call for Channel 5’s Matt Allwright show. Despite her last communication with a producer at 12.19pm, she did not respond to a text at 12.48pm. Devon and Cornwall Police disclosed that the 78-year-old was killed at 12.30pm on Wednesday in her bungalow on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park where she lived with her cat.

Her body was eventually found in the kitchen of her secluded Devon residence at 11.40am the following day, nearly 24 hours after the crime. This delay gave the perpetrator a significant head start over law enforcement, sparking concerns that they may have fled the country.

Authorities made a decision at 5.59pm not to release any CCTV footage or suspect descriptions at that time, indicating that they might have leads on the perpetrator’s identity. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated, “Releasing such information prematurely could compromise ongoing investigations and hinder future leads. The choice to withhold further details is based on operational considerations, and we will share information with the public when appropriate.”

Investigators are operating under the hypothesis that Widdecombe was killed during a burglary interruption. Prior to the incident, police had cautioned residents in Devon to secure their homes due to increased criminal activity during the heatwave.

A manhunt is ongoing after a 26-year-old British man, who was initially arrested near the crime scene in Newton Abbot, was released and cleared of any involvement.

Widdecombe suffered severe head injuries from blunt force trauma. ACC Longman confirmed that progress is being made in the investigation, with multiple leads being pursued. The primary suspect is believed to be a white male. Widdecombe had a notable political career, starting as a Conservative MP in Kent in 1987 and later serving as an MEP for the Brexit Party and spokesperson for Reform UK.

She was also recognized for her appearances on Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother. The suspected killer was reportedly captured on CCTV at her residence. Longman appealed to the public for any information related to the incident, emphasizing the importance of refraining from speculation, particularly on social media, to avoid disrupting the investigation and causing distress to Widdecombe’s family and friends.

Authorities clarified that the case is not being treated as terrorism, and there is no evidence of political motivations behind the crime. Residents of Haytor village, where Ms. Widdecombe lived, expressed shock at the tragedy, highlighting the rarity of crime in the area.

Local community members remembered Widdecombe as a kind and humorous individual, with concerns arising over the possibility of the perpetrator being someone familiar with her. Tributes were paid at her home, including flowers laid by her driver, Peter Horrell. Political figures like Keir Starmer, Andy Burnham, Kemi Badenoch, and Nigel Farage united in condemning the heinous attack and offering condolences to the victim’s family.

Nigel Farage visited Haytor to honor Ms. Widdecombe, confirming that no patterns of abuse towards her were found in party communications.
