Passengers aboard an EasyJet flight were taken aback when the pilot announced that five individuals needed to disembark for the plane to be able to depart from Southend Airport bound for Malaga on April 11. The reason cited was the aircraft being overweight, with the threat of leaving luggage behind if the weight issue wasn’t resolved.
Kelly Wayand, an independent travel agent on the flight, expressed astonishment at the situation, mentioning that the pilot insisted that six passengers needed to leave or risk losing their luggage. Eventually, five passengers volunteered to disembark within a brief 10-minute timeframe, allowing the flight to proceed.
Carly Mowbray, another passenger, described the scene as those who left received applause from the remaining passengers. Notably, there were already ten vacant seats before the additional individuals exited the plane. Despite the delay in take-off, the Airbus A319 aircraft eventually departed at 8.59 am, slightly behind schedule.
In response to the incident, EasyJet clarified that the weight restrictions were due to weather conditions and the short runway at Southend Airport. The affected passengers were accommodated on alternative flights from London Gatwick at no extra cost and were assured compensation in compliance with regulations. Safety remains a top priority for EasyJet, emphasizing the well-being of passengers and crew.
According to UK261 regulations, passengers denied boarding on medium-haul flights like the one from Southend to Malaga may be entitled to compensation ranging from £175 to £350 based on the duration of the delay.
