An unfortunate incident occurred during a flight to Mexico when a passenger passed away, leading to an emergency landing.

The deceased passenger, María Yolanda Guerrero Medina, aged 72 and hailing from Morelia, experienced a fatal health episode less than two hours after the Volaris flight departed from Chicago Midway International Airport on Saturday afternoon. The flight was originally destined for General Francisco Mujica International Airport in Mexico but was redirected due to the situation.

Reports indicate that Medina, who had a history of kidney failure and diabetes spanning over a decade, faced a sudden deterioration in her condition aboard flight 7771, which took off at 3:13pm local time.

Upon being alerted by fellow passengers about Medina’s worsening state, the crew swiftly took action. The pilot contacted authorities seeking approval for an emergency landing to address the medical emergency.

The aircraft touched down at Monterrey International Airport in Mexico just before 5.30pm, where medical personnel and security personnel were on standby. Tragically, emergency responders confirmed that Medina had already passed away, with initial assessments hinting at natural causes of death.

In light of the situation, the airline arranged for another plane to transport the remaining passengers to their intended destination, as per WLS News. Responses from Volaris and Monterrey International Airport regarding the incident are pending.

This unfortunate event follows a recent incident where a 51-year-old man passed away on a Cathay Pacific flight from Manchester to Hong Kong.

The individual fell ill during flight CX216, departing from Manchester Airport on April 23 at 11.04am and arriving at Hong Kong International Airport the next day at 6.53am HKT (11.53pm BST).

Hong Kong authorities were informed by air traffic control around 6.15am that a passenger had collapsed on the aircraft, as reported by Hong Kong Free Press.

The individual was identified as Mr. Chen in local media reports. He was an insurance broker who had relocated to the UK with his family. Reports suggest that he had been battling cancer since the previous year and frequently traveled between Hong Kong and the UK for medical treatments and business purposes.
