Norway’s Queen Sonja has shared her thoughts following Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s recent lung transplant surgery. Mette-Marit, who is married to the King and Queen’s son, underwent the surgery due to her deteriorating health caused by pulmonary fibrosis. The 52-year-old royal has been struggling with this condition since 2018 and was frequently seen using an oxygen mask during public events earlier this year to aid her breathing.
In a statement released by the Norwegian Royal Family last week, it was confirmed that Crown Princess Mette-Marit was recovering well after the surgery. Queen Sonja, while attending an engagement in Kristiansand, expressed her joy when asked about the princess’s progress, stating, “It’s simply fantastic. It’s fantastic that it went so well.”
The successful outcome of the lung transplant was also acknowledged by Arna Tiane, the Head of Thoracic Surgery at Oslo University Hospital, who praised the medical team’s efforts in ensuring a smooth procedure. Mette-Marit will continue her recovery at Rikshospitalet for the next few weeks where she will receive necessary medical care, rehabilitation, and medication adjustments.
A further statement from the Royal Family conveyed their gratitude for the support and warm messages received during this challenging time. Meanwhile, Mette-Marit’s son, 29-year-old Marius Borg Høiby, was recently sentenced to four years in prison for rape offenses involving two women. Prior to his conviction, reports claimed he was frequently visiting his mother in the hospital and allegedly took precautions to avoid media attention.
