“NHS Approves Revolutionary Organ Preservation Technique”

A groundbreaking new method to preserve organs has been greenlit for use in the NHS, potentially saving hundreds of organs for life-saving transplants. The innovative technique involves oxygenating the liver with blood before extraction, doubling the success rate of usable livers compared to traditional preservation methods.

Typically, donated livers are stored by flushing them with cold fluid and packing them in ice, leading to potential damage due to lack of blood and oxygen supply. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has endorsed this new procedure amid a record high of over 8,000 people awaiting transplants on the NHS list.

Dr. Anastasia Chalkidou, NICE programme director, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that many donated livers go unused, resulting in unnecessary deaths. The procedure, known as Abdominal Normothermic Regional Perfusion (ANRP), allows the liver to recover and be assessed for functionality before retrieval.

ANRP has shown promising results, enhancing organ function and reducing the risk of transplant failure. This technique, pioneered by surgeons at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, could lead to a significant increase in viable organs for transplantation.

The implementation of ANRP is part of a broader effort to optimize organ donation and transplantation processes. The potential impact of this new preservation method could result in an additional 150 liver transplants annually, benefiting patients like Jim Kilpatrick, a liver transplant recipient who advocates for advancements in organ procurement.

Moreover, recent legislative changes have streamlined organ donation procedures, promoting an ‘opt-out’ system where individuals are presumed donors unless they explicitly opt out. Despite these positive developments, NHS Blood and Transplant continues to emphasize the importance of registering as an organ donor to ensure one’s wishes are known.
