A new law change is set to prohibit the use of the loudest fireworks outside of professional displays, following extensive efforts by various groups concerned about the distress caused by loud explosions. The move is particularly welcomed by veterans’ organizations and animal welfare advocates who highlight the adverse effects of loud fireworks on pets and livestock.

Minister for Consumer Protection, Kate Dearden, emphasized the need for this change, noting the continuous complaints about nuisance fireworks disrupting people’s lives, affecting their sleep, children, and pets. She shared a personal experience of her dog’s distress due to late-night fireworks and underscored the plan to limit the sale of loud fireworks to professional displays to curb anti-social behavior and safeguard animals.

A forthcoming consultation will propose that only professional displays can use the loudest fireworks, ensuring public safety while allowing organized events to proceed uninterrupted. The Dogs Trust CEO, Owen Sharp, expressed support for the consultation, citing the detrimental impact of fireworks on dogs and their owners, especially during events like Bonfire Night.

Furthermore, Redwings Horse Sanctuary and Combat Stress have also advocated for stricter regulations on fireworks, highlighting the risks and distress caused to horses, owners, and veterans. The government intends to address public concerns regarding noise and anti-social behavior through common-sense proposals while preserving the tradition of organized fireworks displays.

The proposed measures aim to strike a balance between public enjoyment and safety, with a focus on preventing misuse of fireworks that can lead to harm and disturbances. The government’s initiative has garnered support from various sectors, recognizing the importance of addressing the negative impacts of fireworks on both humans and animals.
