“Stricter Border Controls in Place for Britons Traveling to Gibraltar”

Britons traveling to Gibraltar are now subject to updated regulations, such as security screenings and passport checks upon arrival in the British Overseas Territory. These new measures, effective from July 15, are part of a post-Brexit agreement, as reported by travel journalist Simon Calder for The Telegraph.

The UK and EU have inked a deal to establish an open land border between Gibraltar and Spain, which came into operation on Wednesday. This move effectively integrates Gibraltar into the passport-free Schengen Zone, eliminating checkpoints and border barriers.

However, the revised protocols entail stricter border controls at Gibraltar’s airport. Visitors landing at Joshua Hassan Gibraltar International Airport can anticipate two new screening processes to gain entry into both Gibraltar and the Schengen Area. This includes registration under the Entry/Exit System (EES) where applicable, with detailed entry requirements accessible on the GOV.UK website.

To enter Gibraltar, travelers must possess a full UK passport issued within the previous 10 years, valid for at least three months beyond the departure date from Gibraltar or the Schengen Area. British-Irish dual nationals using their Irish passport will be treated as EU citizens upon entry, exempt from certain limitations and systems, while those using their British passport must adhere to the specified conditions.

Prior to July 15, 2026, UK citizens visiting Gibraltar did not fall under the Schengen Area’s 90-day limit, undergoing a single immigration check by Gibraltarian authorities upon arrival due to the pending UK-EU Gibraltar Agreement. They could stay in Gibraltar for up to 90 days without a visa, with passports only needing to be valid for the intended duration. The new regulations introduced from today bring changes for tourists visiting this territory adjacent to Spain.

Simon noted that reaching Gibraltar has become more intricate for British passport holders this summer. While Gibraltar remains outside the Schengen area, UK passport holders are impacted similarly. Spanish passport officials will verify passports upon arrival at the Rock to ensure compliance with expiry and issue date regulations, as well as monitor Schengen Area stays, including time spent in Gibraltar towards the 90-day limit.

Despite the enhanced scrutiny, Simon highlighted a positive aspect – visitors passing through the airport checks are considered within the ‘frontier free zone,’ enabling seamless travel into Spain without additional halts.
