The Government has issued a fresh alert about methanol poisoning for holidaymakers planning trips to nearly 30 countries. As thousands of Brits prepare for summer vacations abroad, officials have launched the “Know the Signs” campaign in collaboration with survivors and families affected by the issue. The campaign aims to educate travelers about the risks of methanol poisoning and encourage them to take precautions while overseas.

In light of the campaign, the Government has updated its travel advice for 29 destinations, emphasizing the importance of being cautious with spirit-based beverages, especially those served as shots, cocktails, or in open containers like buckets and jugs. Travelers are advised to opt for sealed drinks whenever possible, such as branded beers, ciders, wines, and pre-mixed cocktails. It is recommended to avoid homemade or street-sold alcohol and instead purchase drinks from reputable establishments like bars, restaurants, hotels, and licensed venues.

Minister for Consular Hamish Falconer MP emphasized the severity of methanol poisoning, stating that while no one anticipates a holiday ending tragically, the consequences can be devastating, even fatal. He highlighted the bravery of survivors and families in sharing their stories to raise awareness and potentially save lives. Falconer urged travelers to stay informed about travel advisories for their destinations and to exercise caution when consuming spirits overseas by choosing reputable venues and avoiding homemade or free alcoholic drinks.

Methanol is a highly toxic type of industrial alcohol that can contaminate counterfeit or illicitly produced alcoholic beverages. Even a small amount, such as 30ml (approximately a single shot), can be lethal, while smaller doses can cause severe and lasting harm, including vision loss.

Among those supporting the campaign is Margaret McKie, whose daughter Kirsty tragically passed away after consuming contaminated alcohol in Bali in July 2022. Margaret shared Kirsty’s story, highlighting the importance of recognizing the symptoms of methanol poisoning and seeking prompt medical attention to prevent tragic outcomes. Survivor Calum MacDonald, who suffered vision impairment due to methanol poisoning in Laos in 2024, emphasized the significance of understanding the warning signs to protect oneself and others.

Hannah-Mei Grisley, who lost a friend to methanol-contaminated alcohol in Laos, emphasized the need for awareness and quick action when experiencing symptoms of poisoning. She stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical help if any signs of methanol poisoning are observed.

Early signs of methanol poisoning include vomiting, impaired judgment, loss of balance, and drowsiness. Subsequent symptoms may include abdominal pain, vertigo, hyperventilation, breathlessness, blurred vision or blindness, coma, and convulsions. Vision issues, such as blurry vision, sensitivity to bright lights, and potential blindness, are critical indicators of methanol poisoning. If any of these symptoms are present, urgent medical assistance should be sought immediately.
