Some aspects of this role can feel like a formal ceremony, following a set routine and procedures.

But when I step up to the dispatch box today to announce the names of all women suspected of being murdered by men in the past year, the formality of the job fades away.

Reading out these names annually sheds light on the grim reality faced by women in our nation and worldwide on a daily basis. It’s a day that never gets easier. Honoring these women in this manner underscores the weighty responsibility I bear.

Each name represents a symbol of the collective letdown of our Parliament, institutions, and society in safeguarding women from harm.

Today, I rise not only as a Minister and MP but also as one of a record 265 women MPs, uniting to commemorate International Women’s Day.

It brings to mind the remarkable achievements of women globally in social, cultural, academic, and political spheres.

This is precisely why I’ve chosen this day – how can we celebrate women worldwide without acknowledging the harsh realities faced by many?

This truth is often concealed by many. If we use this day to merely pat ourselves on the back while women are being victimized, that is not progress but a mere show.

Therefore, this moment holds immense significance for me. Not just to pay homage to lives tragically cut short but to reflect on our identity as a nation and whose safety we prioritize. However, this moment is not about me.

It belongs to these women and to all women and girls enduring threats, abuse, and harassment, often paying with their lives. Yes, this is the toughest day of the year.

My voice trembles, tears are held back, and the emotions of the day can be overwhelming.

Despite the discomfort and weight of the moment, I will persist in honoring women in this manner. We must continue the battle so women and girls can feel secure in their homes, on the streets, and in the workplace.

This is why we are leveraging the full might of the state to reduce violence against women and girls by half within a decade. It’s not just another governmental policy – it’s a lifeline.

By placing the protection of women and girls at the core of all our endeavors, we truly honor these women. And I won’t stop there.

I am committed to taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of women and girls in this country.
