A mother reveals that her seven-year-old daughter now avoids going near the ocean after falling ill with a parasite during a family trip to Cornwall last summer. Little Willow Clarke recalls enduring 12 days of suffering, including frequent vomiting, significant weight loss, and periods of delirium.

The diagnosis revealed that Willow had contracted cryptosporidium, a parasite commonly found in human and animal waste that can contaminate various water sources. Willow’s mother, Alice, suspects that the infection occurred while Willow was in the sea.

The severity of the illness forced Willow to miss her role as a bridesmaid at her aunt’s wedding, a disappointment for the young girl. This incident comes at a time when concerns are rising about the health risks associated with swimming in the sea due to potential sewage contamination.

Alice, a self-employed cleaner turned special needs teaching assistant, recalls the distressing experience of watching Willow suffer from the parasite. Willow’s symptoms included extreme fatigue, high fever, and persistent vomiting, leading to dehydration and a need for medical attention.

Despite physical recovery, Willow continues to harbor emotional scars, refusing to approach the sea or even paddle in it due to fear stemming from her traumatic experience. Alice firmly believes that the sea was the source of Willow’s illness, causing lasting psychological impacts on both of them.

The financial strain of taking time off work to care for Willow adds to the family’s challenges. South West Water denies responsibility, stating they do not have a storm overflow in the area. However, the possibility of the parasite originating from external sources remains.

Recent studies suggest that cryptosporidium can survive in seawater for extended periods, raising concerns about water safety. The family’s ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in seemingly harmless recreational activities near the water.
