A mother from Paddock Wood, Kent, is fighting for a Blue Badge for her two-year-old son Ronnie, who has Phelan-McDermid syndrome and hypertonia, making him immobile. Despite his condition, the local council has denied the badge twice, stating that he does not meet the eligibility criteria for children under three. The mother has appealed the decision, providing evidence from medical professionals, but the refusal persists.

The family struggles daily without the badge, facing challenges in attending medical appointments and utilizing necessary equipment for Ronnie. Despite efforts to secure the badge through various channels, the family remains in a difficult situation. They argue that Ronnie’s unique circumstances should be considered individually rather than as part of a standard assessment process.

The family’s MP, Mike Martin, has voiced support for their cause, expressing concern over the council’s handling of the situation. He advocates for a fairer and more compassionate system for families with disabled children. The local council, however, maintains that they must adhere to national guidelines when assessing Blue Badge eligibility, emphasizing the need for consistency in their decisions.

The family remains determined to fight for Ronnie’s access to a Blue Badge and hopes for a more understanding approach from the authorities in recognizing the challenges they face on a daily basis.
