A mother was viciously assaulted in her home by her own daughter and son-in-law after they forcibly entered her flat. The 56-year-old woman suffered severe injuries, including a brain bleed, during the attack by Paula and Malcolm McGill in Clydebank on May 6, 2024. The assailants were sentenced to four and a half years in jail for the assault.
The High Court in Glasgow heard that the mother and her 41-year-old daughter had been estranged for around seven years despite living near each other. Police were initially called to the McGills’ residence for a noise complaint but left after Paula McGill denied hearing anything. However, shortly after, the daughter and son-in-law broke into the victim’s home.
During the assault, Paula McGill verbally abused the victim before dragging her to the ground by her hair and kicking her repeatedly in the face and head. Malcolm McGill also stomped on the victim’s ribs, causing serious injuries. The attackers fled the scene but were captured on a doorbell camera leaving the area.
The injured mother managed to crawl to her bedroom where a neighbor found her and alerted the authorities. Due to the severity of her injuries, police had to transport her to the hospital themselves. She sustained multiple injuries, including fractures, a collapsed lung, and severe bruising.
After being discharged from the hospital, the McGills were arrested on the same day. Forensic evidence, including blood marks on Malcolm McGill’s shoes, linked them to the assault. Both individuals pleaded guilty to assaulting the victim, leading to a reduced sentence of four and a half years each.
The judge imposed a lifelong non-harassment order on the McGills, preventing them from contacting the victim. Lord Mulholland warned that breaching this order would result in imprisonment.
