Camilla, the Queen’s consort, recently visited a St Mungo’s accommodation service in South East London where she witnessed the positive impact of a book donation made by The Queen’s Reading Room. The donation has significantly helped individuals recovering from homelessness by improving their well-being and confidence through a reading scheme.

The partnership between The Queen’s Reading Room and St Mungo’s began in 2024 when a book group was initiated for individuals supported by the charity. Since the start of 2025, The Queen’s Reading Room has generously provided hundreds of books, bookshelves, and training resources to enable frontline teams and volunteers to organize book clubs for homeless individuals.

The increased access to books and reading has led to tangible benefits for the recipients, including enhanced confidence, improved mental well-being, and increased engagement with support services. During the visit, Camilla interacted with St Mungo’s staff and volunteers, listening to firsthand accounts from individuals who have directly benefited from the reading scheme.

Former client Lee shared his emotional journey from living on the streets to finding solace in reading, which ultimately played a crucial role in his recovery. Camilla, acknowledging the impact of reading, donated 20 carefully selected books based on residents’ interests to further support the cause.

The event also highlighted the shared passion for reading between Camilla and broadcaster Lorraine Kelly. The Queen expressed her delight in witnessing the positive outcomes of the reading initiative and emphasized the importance of books as a means of escapism and personal growth.

St. Mungo’s, a prominent homelessness charity in England, has witnessed the transformative effects of the reading scheme on residents and clients alike. The initiative has not only facilitated engagement with support services but has also brought joy and enrichment through the world of literature.

The Queen, in her address, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts between The Queen’s Reading Room and St Mungo’s in promoting reading among vulnerable populations. The event underscored the significance of literacy in empowering individuals and fostering a sense of hope and community among those striving to overcome homelessness.
