Masked individuals have attacked the police by throwing bricks and a petrol bomb, leading to multiple vehicles being set on fire during riots in Belfast and Northern Ireland following a violent stabbing incident.
The suspect in the stabbing case, a 30-year-old Sudanese national named Hadi Alodid, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder. Anti-immigration demonstrations began in Belfast, resulting in property destruction and targeting of non-white residents.
Riots resumed the following night and spread to other areas in Northern Ireland. In one incident, a masked rioter accidentally set himself on fire while trying to throw a petrol bomb in Portadown.
Amid the unrest, police had to deploy a water cannon to disperse around 200 masked youths attempting to march on a migrant hotel in Newtownabbey. The situation escalated further when a nearby lorry was set ablaze.
Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn denounced the riots as “racist thuggery,” emphasizing that targeting individuals based on their skin color is unacceptable.
The stabbing victim, identified as Stephen Ogilvie, sustained severe injuries, including the loss of his left eye. His family clarified his stable condition and disapproved of false information circulating about the incident, expressing their disgust at the disorder occurring in the streets.
In a disturbing incident, a nurse was harassed on her way to Ulster Hospital, where she bravely continued to work despite the intimidation. The South Eastern Trust condemned the racist attack and praised the nurse for her dedication to caring for the vulnerable.
Following the violence, twelve police officers were injured, and sixteen individuals were arrested. The Northern Ireland Secretary acknowledged a decrease in disorder compared to the previous night but condemned the racist violence witnessed in the aftermath of the stabbing attack.
The unfolding events prompted concerns about the involvement of paramilitary groups in the unrest, with calls for respect towards caregivers providing essential services. The situation remains tense as authorities work to restore peace and investigate the incidents.
