A 35-year-old man has been brought to court on a murder charge in connection with the death of a nine-year-old girl who was discovered injured in Arbroath.

The girl, Minnie Merriman, hailing from West Yorkshire, was found at the Elliot industrial estate in Arbroath shortly after midnight on Monday while her family was camping nearby. She was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.

Christopher Rice, 35, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, faced the murder charge during his appearance at Forfar Sheriff Court on Wednesday. He did not enter a plea and has been detained for further examination.

Rice is scheduled to reappear in court within the next eight days. Police have confirmed that Minnie and the accused were acquainted with each other.

In a statement released through Police Scotland, Minnie’s family paid tribute to her, describing her as “absolutely incredible, beautiful, and brave.” They have requested privacy during this challenging time.

Reports suggest that Minnie was camping with her family, who are receiving support from specialized officers. Detective Inspector Mike Ness from Police Scotland’s major investigation team expressed condolences to Minnie’s family and assured that investigations are ongoing with a continued police presence in the area.

Concerned individuals with information are urged to contact the authorities or approach the officers in the area. West Yorkshire Police are collaborating with Police Scotland in the investigation.
