Britons may experience multiple heatwaves throughout the year, with predictions of a “three-month summer sizzler.” The UK has already entered its third heatwave, expecting temperatures to reach 35C this week. The Met Office foresees abundant sunshine and gentle winds in many southern regions, possibly leading to a new record high of 40.3C in the coming weeks.
Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, indicated that heatwaves are likely to persist over the next few months due to the extended summer period, including September. Temperatures in Teddington, southwest London, hit 34C on Monday, with the East of England expected to be the warmest region later this week.
Dale mentioned the influence of climate change and a strong El Niño event on the current weather patterns, emphasizing the escalating temperatures globally. He warned that the UK and other northern hemisphere regions could experience prolonged heatwaves due to these factors.
The Met Office confirmed that the Southeast of England has met the official heatwave criteria after three consecutive days of temperatures exceeding 28C. As temperatures continue to rise across the UK, more regions are likely to experience heatwave conditions. Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates advised the public to take precautions against the heat and sun exposure due to high UV levels.
Pollen levels are expected to be very high across most UK regions, even in northern areas like Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian, and Scottish Borders. Individuals with hayfever are urged to take extra precautions, such as frequent showers to minimize pollen exposure.
