Britons preparing for a trip to one of the world’s largest theme parks have been cautioned following an incident where an individual infected with measles spent 11 hours at the location. The Los Angeles health authorities issued an urgent advisory after verifying that a contagious person visited Universal Studios, Hollywood, on July 26th, from 10am to 9pm.
The identity of the infected individual has not been revealed, but the health officials have warned that numerous visitors might have been exposed to the virus during the period of visit. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is actively engaged in identifying and notifying individuals who may have had contact with the infected visitor. Universal Studios Hollywood, a popular attraction in California that draws approximately 9.6 million tourists annually, including many British holidaymakers, sees an average of 26,000 visitors each day.
Measles, known as one of the most contagious diseases globally, has the potential to infect up to nine out of ten unvaccinated individuals who come in contact with it. The virus spreads through tiny droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes, remaining airborne for up to two hours post-exposure.
Dr. Muntu Davis, the Public Health Officer of Los Angeles County, emphasized the importance of ensuring full protection against measles, especially for those who visited the park on the mentioned date. With summer travel in full swing, the risk of exposure to infectious diseases escalates, underscoring the need for confirming immunity status and receiving the MMR vaccine if necessary before attending crowded events.
Health authorities reaffirmed that the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine stands as the most effective shield against measles, significantly reducing the risk of contracting the disease by up to 97% after two doses. Early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a distinct red rash appearing days later, starting on the face and spreading across the body.
Measles can lead to severe complications, particularly in vulnerable groups such as infants, pregnant women, those with weakened immune systems, and unvaccinated individuals. In critical cases, it may result in pneumonia, encephalitis, hospitalization, and, in rare instances, death. Individuals experiencing symptoms after visiting the theme park are advised to stay home, avoid public places, and contact a healthcare provider by phone before seeking medical assistance, to prevent further transmission of the infection.
