A man has been sentenced to life in prison for raping and killing his estranged wife while trying to make her death appear as suicide.
Michael Thompson, aged 56, was found guilty of subjecting Kimberley Thompson to long-term domestic abuse, which included controlling behavior, coercion, and physical violence. He then suffocated her at their home in Northampton in the early hours of August 9 the previous year.
During the trial that lasted seven weeks, it was revealed that Thompson did not attend his sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court. His defense lawyer, Jonas Hankin KC, informed the court that Thompson chose not to appear voluntarily.
Thompson claimed during the trial that he and Ms. Thompson had consensual relations before he discovered her dead body with tablets and alcohol containers around her. However, a post-mortem examination revealed only traces of caffeine, paracetamol, and codeine in her system, with no significant alcohol presence.
The couple, who had been married for 19 years and had two children, were going through a separation at the time of the incident, with divorce proceedings already initiated.
Judge Nirmal Shant KC sentenced Thompson to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 33 years. Thompson was found guilty by the jury of rape, murder, and two counts of perverting the course of justice. The judge criticized Thompson for his lack of remorse, stating, “You have shown no regret for your actions.”
Judge Shant addressed Thompson’s behavior during the trial, highlighting his refusal to engage in court proceedings and face the consequences of his actions. The judge condemned Thompson’s actions as cowardly and disrespectful, particularly towards the victim’s family.
