A Martin Lewis enthusiast shared how he managed to retrieve £7,600 in overpaid council tax dating back 18 years. The individual, named John, detailed his experience after being prompted to review his council tax band following an article on the MoneySavingExpert.com (MSE) website. It is believed that numerous households are currently placed in incorrect council tax bands.

If you suspect that you might be affected, you could be unknowingly overpaying council tax and may be eligible for a refund along with reduced future bills. John described the process as time-consuming but expressed willingness to repeat it if necessary.

Richmond Council confirmed that John had overpaid £7,602.71 in council tax. However, instead of reimbursing the full sum, they refunded him £4,564.14 and credited the remaining £3,038.57 towards his 2026/27 council tax account.

Upon MSE’s intervention with the council, John received almost the entire owed amount. His monthly direct debit was reinstated as originally planned, and the outstanding balance was adjusted on his recent council tax bill.

John advised others in similar situations to ensure that any corrected council tax bands result in full refunds without unauthorized alterations to payment arrangements. He expressed gratitude to MSE for empowering individuals to challenge incorrect council tax bands effectively.

A spokesperson from Richmond Council emphasized the importance of residents directly contacting the Council Tax Team to promptly address any account concerns. While confidentiality prevented them from discussing specific cases, they assured active efforts to resolve John’s situation.

If you suspect an incorrect council tax banding, consider conducting thorough research before initiating a challenge. Comparing your band with neighboring properties online via GOV.UK or Scottish Assessors can provide valuable insights. It’s crucial to assess your property’s 1991 (England and Scotland) or 2003 (Wales) value before pursuing a challenge.

For potential challenges, contact the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) in England and Wales or Scottish Assessors in Scotland. If dissatisfied with the outcome, appealing to an independent valuation tribunal is an option for recourse.
