A recent poll indicates that the majority of Britons believe Donald Trump’s second presidential term has had a negative impact on the UK and are calling for Keir Starmer to take a firmer stance against him. Only 11% of respondents viewed Trump’s return favorably, while 58% expressed dissatisfaction. The survey conducted by Deltapoll also revealed that 41% of participants feel that the Prime Minister should be more critical of the US President, with over half of them advocating for a significantly tougher approach. In contrast, only 16% believe Starmer should be more lenient towards Trump, and less than a quarter think his current stance is appropriate.

The Mirror previously highlighted Starmer’s handling of Trump and the Iran conflict as one of his notable successes since assuming office. Despite initially maintaining an amicable relationship with the US President, Starmer drew Trump’s ire by rejecting involvement in his military endeavors in the Middle East, leading to Trump criticizing him as “no Winston Churchill.” Nevertheless, nearly half of those surveyed (43%) indicated that their opinion of Starmer remained unchanged despite his position on Trump’s actions.

In response to the situation, Trump suggested that Starmer could salvage his standing by reopening the North Sea for oil drilling and implementing stricter immigration policies. Trump emphasized the need for Starmer to make these policy changes during the King’s recent visit to Washington DC, warning that failure to do so could jeopardize Starmer’s prospects for recovery.

The poll, conducted by Deltapoll, involved 3,353 British adults surveyed online between April 26th and May 1st, 2026, with a significant number of respondents from Wales and Scotland. The data has been adjusted to reflect the overall British adult population.
