London Mayor Sadiq Khan has remarked that US President Donald Trump seems to have a strong infatuation with him following Trump’s latest verbal attack. Khan quipped that he is constantly on Trump’s mind, rent-free, as the President resurrected their ongoing feud by labeling him a “bad person” and a “horrible representative.”
Trump, unprompted, publicly criticized Khan’s competency, stating, “I don’t want to cause any problems, but your Mayor of London is grossly incompetent.” In response, Khan, who has served as London’s mayor for more than a decade and won three elections, expressed bewilderment at Trump’s fixation on him, suggesting it might stem from his leadership of a progressive, multicultural, and successful city.
Highlighting London’s recent recognition with the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Prize for being the world’s best city, Khan speculated that Trump’s animosity could be linked to this achievement. The ongoing animosity between the two dates back to 2015 when Khan condemned Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the US, labeling the President’s stance on Islam as “ignorant.”
In the past, Trump has mischaracterized Khan’s responses to events like the London Bridge terror attack and launched personal attacks, including calling him a “stone cold loser.” Khan, on the other hand, has criticized Trump’s rhetoric and behavior, particularly towards international affairs.
Regarding his own political future, Khan dismissed rumors of vying for a parliamentary seat, affirming his satisfaction with his current role. He expressed anticipation in collaborating with Andy Burnham, recently sworn in as Makerfield’s MP and speculated to become the next Prime Minister of the UK. Khan emphasized their longstanding friendship and history of working together, hinting at a positive future relationship should Burnham assume the premiership.
