This summer, families can enjoy more affordable outings and dining experiences thanks to a new savings initiative. The “Great British Summer Savings” program has implemented a temporary VAT reduction to assist families in managing their expenses during this season.
Merlin Entertainments, the company behind popular venues like Alton Towers and Legoland, has adjusted ticket prices to reflect the savings from the summer VAT cut. Advance tickets for both parks now start at £29.75, reduced from the previous price of £34.
Additionally, Longleat safari park in Wiltshire has lowered the cost of advance tickets for a family of four from £139.80 to £122.30, offering families more affordable options for a day out.
Participating cinema chains such as Odeon, Vue, and Cineworld are also part of the initiative. Odeon, for example, has announced a reduction in the price of a family ticket for two adults and two children from £32 to £28.50 for the summer season.
In the realm of dining, popular restaurant chains like Greene King, McDonald’s, Wetherspoons, and Nando’s are joining the effort by reducing the prices of children’s meals. For instance, Nando’s has decreased the cost of its “Nandino” meals from £6.95 to £6.08, while Wetherspoons’ children’s meal price has dropped from £5.75 to £5.03.
McDonald’s is also offering discounts, lowering the price of a typical Happy Meal by 27% to £2.99. While businesses are not legally obligated to participate in the scheme, many establishments across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are embracing the opportunity until September 1.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of making family activities more accessible by reducing the financial burden on households. Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves echoed this sentiment, highlighting the initiative’s dual benefit of enhancing family experiences and supporting businesses nationwide.
