Linton Weirich, known for a controversial incident involving a prison guard at HMP Wandsworth, has come forward to shed light on corruption within UK prisons. Back in 2024, Weirich made headlines for a video showing him engaging in inappropriate behavior with prison officer Linda De Sousa Abreu, triggering a police inquiry.

Weirich, now 38 years old and a repeat offender since 2003, expressed concerns about deteriorating discipline in prisons and the rise of staff corruption. He highlighted the shift from experienced ex-military or security personnel to younger, less authoritative individuals overseeing inmate activities, leading to a lack of control.

According to Weirich, many staff members engage in illicit activities, earning more from smuggling goods than their standard wages. He revealed instances where De Sousa Abreu brought in food items for inmates at inflated prices, generating profits through illicit means.

Reflecting on the fallout from the viral video, Weirich regretted the negative impact it had on his personal life and relationships. Following the incident, he was transferred from HMP Wandsworth to HMP Swaleside, where he faced a violent assault while holding his infant child.

De Sousa Abreu resigned after the scandal and later admitted to misconduct, resulting in a jail sentence. Weirich emphasized his focus on moving forward from the past, while De Sousa Abreu expressed remorse and acknowledged the challenges of managing an understaffed and demanding prison environment.

In response to the situation, a Ministry of Justice spokesperson reaffirmed the dedication of the majority of prison staff and outlined measures to address corruption, including enhanced vetting procedures and increased security funding to combat illegal activities in prisons.

The Mirror has reached out to the Ministry of Justice for additional comments on the matter.
