Britons are being advised to double-check their smoke alarms to ensure they are functioning properly as the UK experiences another scorching day in this exceptional heatwave.
During periods of high temperatures, electrical systems and devices can overheat, posing a risk to those nearby. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct electrical safety checks, such as verifying the functionality of smoke alarms, especially in summer, to detect any issues preemptively.
The recent smoke alarm advisories coincide with the Met Office confirming a new temperature record for May. Meteorologists described last night as a “tropical night” in the UK, with temperatures not dropping below 21.3C at Kenley Airfield, south London, setting a new record for the highest daily minimum temperature for the month.
Given the hot weather, many Britons are likely using pedestal fans for temporary cooling. However, appliance repair expert Ian Palmer-Smith from Domestic & General cautioned against leaving fans on overnight, as it could heighten the risk of electrical fires.
Licensed electrician David Miloshev supported this advice, emphasizing the importance of turning off fans before sleeping to prevent potential electric fires and dust circulation. He also recommended ensuring smoke alarm systems are operational as a safety measure.
Apart from fire concerns, Dr. Kiran Dintyala highlighted other drawbacks of running a fan all night during summer. Continuous airflow can spread dust and pollen, triggering severe reactions in allergy and asthma sufferers. Additionally, prolonged exposure to the fan’s dry air may lead to dehydration, dry eyes, sinus infections, bronchitis, and nosebleeds.
Dr. Dintyala further noted that prolonged exposure to cool air can cause muscle stiffness and aches upon waking. Martin Seeley, CEO of Mattress Next Day and a sleep expert, echoed these sentiments, advising against leaving fans on overnight to avoid potential health issues like irritation from dust accumulation and dehydration-induced drowsiness.
In conclusion, experts recommend turning off fans before sleeping to mitigate risks of electrical fires, health issues, and discomfort associated with prolonged exposure to cool air.
