The trend of ‘Pay to move’ programmes is gaining popularity globally, as many countries introduce unique initiatives to attract individuals to areas facing declining populations and economic challenges.

Five countries are offering incentives for individuals to relocate in 2026, providing an opportunity for those looking for a new beginning to explore their options.

These attractive relocation incentives aim to increase the population of specific regions and invigorate local economies, particularly in areas with aging workforces, according to reports.

Since 2018, the scenic mountain village of Albinen in Switzerland has been enticing individuals with generous relocation benefits.

The initiative offers adults up to 25,000 Swiss francs (approximately £23,600 in 2026) and children up to 10,000 Swiss francs (around £9,400) to encourage them to move to the rural village.

For instance, a family consisting of two adults and one child could receive a total of 70,000 Swiss francs (roughly £66,100) to support their relocation and settlement in the village.

Applicants must be below 45 years old, commit to residing in Albinen for at least a decade, own or build a property valued at 200,000 Swiss francs or more, and hold Swiss citizenship or a C Residence Permit.

Described as one of Switzerland’s most charming villages, Albinen offers a unique lifestyle with limited amenities, as highlighted by former Mayor Nicole Köppel.

In a move to attract investment and foster economic growth, the Chilean government is awarding equity-free grants of up to £74,000 to tech-focused start-ups willing to establish operations in the country.

The initiative, available to individuals from any country, includes a two-year work visa and various support services such as networking opportunities, office space, mentorship, funding without equity stakes, and startup assistance.

While primarily targeting entrepreneurship rather than permanent migration, the programme has successfully attracted numerous founders and startups to Chile from around the globe.

In a bid to rejuvenate rural areas affected by depopulation as young individuals migrate to urban centers, leaving behind older residents, the picturesque Italian island of Sardinia is providing incentives for individuals to move there.

The scheme is open to those willing to register as residents in smaller settlements on the island with fewer than 3,000 inhabitants, offering grants of up to €15,000 (approximately £13,000) per household without repayment obligations.

The funding aims to assist in purchasing or renovating a home, capped at 50% of the total expenditure,
