Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has expressed his support for Keir Starmer in a potential leadership contest against Andy Burnham. Lammy commended Starmer as the most resilient individual he has ever encountered and emphasized Starmer’s readiness to face any challengers.

In an interview with Sky News, Lammy highlighted Starmer’s mandate from the British public less than two years ago and stressed the importance of allowing him to fulfill his mandate. While addressing the possibility of Burnham entering the race, Lammy stated that Burnham is capable of making his own decisions without needing advice.

Meanwhile, Starmer reiterated his commitment to his position and stated that he would not step down from his role. He emphasized the need for stability in the government amidst global challenges, asserting that internal conflicts could hinder progress.

Burnham recently confirmed his intention to participate in a leadership race if he successfully returns to Parliament, necessitating the support of 81 fellow MPs to launch a challenge. Wes Streeting, a former Health Secretary, has already announced his candidacy for a potential contest.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson reaffirmed his determination to continue leading the country, citing the electoral victory in 2024 and emphasizing the need to focus on critical decisions for the nation. Johnson urged against internal strife within the Labour Party, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the responsibilities entrusted by the electorate.
