An ally of Keir Starmer has cautioned Labour MPs against considering a leadership challenge to the Prime Minister as tensions rise in Downing Street ahead of the upcoming local elections.
Speaking on LBC, Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden emphasized that changing the leadership would not address the country’s issues and advised against hasty decisions resembling those of the Conservative Party. He expressed confidence that Starmer would resist any attempts to remove him and urged MPs to remain steadfast.
McFadden stated, “The notion of replacing the Prime Minister at the snap of a finger has been thoroughly tested in recent times without resolving our problems. This approach is unlikely to be effective now, and I am not the only one who holds this view.”
Former Prime Minister John Major recently highlighted the frequency of changing Prime Ministers in the UK, emphasizing the dedication of the current Prime Minister to public service. McFadden pledged his support for the Prime Minister’s continued efforts in office.
The remarks come as voters gear up for significant elections in England, Wales, and Scotland this week, representing a crucial test for Labour since their substantial victory in 2024. Polling suggests Labour may face significant losses in council seats in England, potential loss of control in Wales, and a tough battle in Scotland. The outcome could play a vital role in determining Starmer’s future within the party.
Speculation is rife about potential leadership contenders within Labour, with Angela Rayner and Wes Streeting among those mentioned. However, Andy Burnham, who has expressed leadership aspirations, is ineligible to compete as he is not a Member of Parliament.
In an article for the Mirror, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of choices in politics, particularly for families. He urged voters to consider the options carefully, highlighting the contrast between unity and division, progress and anger-driven politics, and a solid national plan versus empty promises.
The Prime Minister concluded, “Farage, Badenoch, and Polanski have proven incapable of rising to the occasion. However, my Labour Government is ready.”
