The Kremlin has issued a warning to embassies and key decision-making centers in Kyiv to evacuate in anticipation of a potential retaliatory strike by President Vladimir Putin if Kyiv were to launch an attack during Russia’s significant Victory Day Parade.
Ukraine conducted nearly 350 drone strikes across 20 Russian regions in a large-scale assault, targeting a Moscow military hub, resulting in explosions heard throughout the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously indicated that his troops would retaliate against Moscow’s actions, specifically referencing a double-tap strike by Russia on rescuers at a burning building.
As tensions escalated, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson advised the evacuation of diplomats from Kyiv, expressing concerns about potential attacks on decision-making centers. The Ministry warned of possible strikes if Kyiv proceeded with its plans during the Victory Day celebrations.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine began when President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. While Russian forces initially faced setbacks, they have since expanded their control over territories in the Donbas region. The conflict traces back to Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea following political upheaval in Kyiv.
In light of the looming Victory Day Parade, fears of military vulnerabilities and security concerns have prompted heightened security measures in Moscow. President Zelensky hinted at potential losses affecting Russia’s parade due to casualties and resource depletion resulting from the conflict.
Recent reports suggest increased apprehension within the Kremlin, with Vladimir Putin allegedly seeking refuge in underground shelters amidst concerns of a possible coup plot. The weekend events are anticipated with rising tension as both sides brace for potential escalations.
