A soldier from the King’s Troop, Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan, 24, received a funeral with full military honors following a tragic incident at the Royal Windsor Horse Show where she fell from her horse and passed away. The ceremony, which took place on May 15 at 7 pm, gathered family, friends, and military personnel to pay their respects at The Guards’ Chapel in Central London. Known for her professionalism, Lance Bombardier Sullivan had been involved in significant events such as the late Queen’s state funeral in 2022 and the coronation of Charles and Camilla.
The solemn procession featured her coffin carried on a World War I gun carriage from The Royal Mews to The Guards’ Chapel. State trumpeters from The Band of the Household Cavalry played fanfares as the coffin, draped in a union flag, was brought in. Following a three-round volley at Wellington Barracks, L/Bdr Sullivan’s personal belongings, including her cap and medals, were handed over to her family. Her horse Neymar carried her riding boots in a traditional military gesture as a mark of respect for her final journey.
In remembrance of Lance Bombardier Sullivan, flags at all Army buildings in London flew at half-mast. Floral tributes spelling out “Sully,” her nickname, were displayed alongside photos of her in uniform riding her horse. Buckingham Palace expressed deep sorrow over her passing, with the King extending condolences to her family. Members of the royal family, including Charles, were present during the incident but were informed about its severity later.
Described as an exceptional jockey with a natural love for horses, Lance Bombardier Sullivan was hailed by her commanding officer as a radiant presence in any setting. Joining the Army Training Centre in 2020 and later the King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, she was actively involved in ceremonial duties, including Royal Gun Salutes in London parks. Additionally, she had recently achieved the status of an advanced regimental riding instructor, focusing on training military horses and mentoring her fellow gunners.
Known for her dedication to The Troop, Lance Bombardier Sullivan always participated in extra activities, such as show jumping and The Troop Race. Her enthusiasm and energy left a lasting impact on those around her, making her a cherished member of the military community.
