Sir Clive Alderton, the King’s top aide and chief strategist, has announced his decision to step down next year as he reaches his 60th birthday in May. Having served the Royal Household for two decades, Alderton expressed his gratitude for the honor of working with the King and Queen during significant historic events. He mentioned his intention to continue supporting them in a more informal capacity going forward.
With a distinguished career that includes diplomatic roles in various countries, Alderton transitioned into a senior position within the Royal Household, eventually becoming the Principal Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. Following the ascension of King Charles, he assumed the role of the King’s Private Secretary at Buckingham Palace.
During his tenure as the King’s principal private secretary, Alderton has guided the monarch through crucial moments, including health challenges and important state visits. He has also played a key role in handling personal matters, such as the aftermath of Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back from their royal duties.
While the decision to step down came as a surprise to many, it was made to facilitate a smooth transition for his successor. The Royal Household aims to commence a comprehensive recruitment process to identify qualified candidates internally and externally. The handover to the new appointee is expected to take place in spring/summer 2027.
