The King has decided not to make Buckingham Palace his official residence despite the completion of a £369 million renovation project. The iconic palace will continue as the operational center of the monarchy, with the King and Queen residing at Clarence House in London. Additionally, the monarch maintains homes in Scotland, Gloucestershire, and Norfolk, and utilizes Windsor Castle in Berkshire. This decision breaks a tradition of almost two centuries, with Buckingham Palace serving as the monarch’s base since Queen Victoria’s reign.

Royal aides emphasized that Buckingham Palace will remain a prominent venue, hosting various events such as State Visits, investitures, and garden parties. The palace spokesperson expressed the King’s enduring fondness and respect for the palace’s significance in royal and public life.

Regarding royal finances, the King is set to receive a significant pay increase, with core funding for the monarchy increasing to £100 million annually. This boost in funding was approved by Royal Trustees, including outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves, to address maintenance backlogs, enhance cybersecurity, and install energy-efficient systems in royal residences.

Despite the financial adjustments, concerns have been raised about the cost of the Royal Family, with calls for a more cost-effective monarchy. Notably, Prince William’s personal wealth surpasses that of the King, with detailed reports revealing the financial aspects of the royal family’s operations, including tax payments and expenditures.

As the Buckingham Palace renovations near completion in 2027, the Sovereign Grant will return to its core level of around £100 million annually, marking a transition from the temporary uplift put in place for the palace renovations. The funding structure ensures ongoing financial support for the royal institution’s official duties and palace maintenance.

The Sovereign Grant report highlighted the financial transparency of the royal household, emphasizing that the funds are not for personal income but for the institution’s work. The report also addressed the percentage of ethnic minority employees, acknowledging a decrease but reaffirming a commitment to diversity targets.

In terms of gender equality, Buckingham Palace leads initiatives to close the gender pay gap, with more women employed than men. However, efforts to increase ethnic minority representation remain a priority for the royal household. The report also detailed the royal family’s travel expenses and engagements, providing insights into their official duties and expenditures.

Overall, the royal family’s financial and operational aspects continue to be scrutinized, with a focus on transparency, accountability, and effective use of public funds.
