The government has revealed plans to utilize more military barracks for accommodating asylum seekers, moving them out of hotels. The Home Office confirmed the closure of 20 additional hotels as part of an increased effort to relocate individuals to Ministry of Defence (MOD) sites. In response to reduced Channel crossings, Labour leader Keir Starmer noted a decreased need for housing asylum seekers, suggesting improved control over the system compared to previous administrations.

Legislation proposed by Shabana Mahmood aims to streamline deportations by addressing perceived legal barriers. Military sites such as MOD Bicester, RAF Barnham, and RAF Linton-on-Ouse are slated to house asylum seekers, with extensions planned for existing sites in Crowborough and Wethersfield. Advocacy groups have criticized the use of military facilities, citing concerns about their suitability for accommodating vulnerable populations.

Prime Minister Starmer highlighted progress in immigration management, citing a significant decrease in net migration since taking office. The government’s strategy includes transitioning asylum seekers from hotels to military sites, with a goal to close all remaining hotels by 2029. Despite opposition, the government remains committed to relocating individuals to ex-military locations believed to offer more suitable housing solutions.

Kamena Dorling from the Helen Bamber Foundation expressed dismay over the proposed relocation, emphasizing the potential adverse effects on asylum seekers’ well-being. The impending Immigration and Asylum Bill by Ms. Mahmood is expected to introduce stricter deportation regulations and asylum appeal processes. Imran Hussain of the Refugee Council called for a focus on improving initial decision-making processes rather than making appeals more challenging.

The shift towards military barracks as accommodations for asylum seekers comes amidst ongoing efforts to reform immigration policies and streamline deportation procedures. The government’s initiatives aim to address housing challenges and enhance the asylum system’s efficiency.
