A family in mourning has shared heartbreaking footage of their son’s tragic assault in a bid to prevent another unnecessary loss of life.

Luke Thompson, aged 25, lost his life after being punched by Dylan Maxwell during a confrontation, leading to fatal head injuries. Mr. Thompson sustained a fractured skull and brain bleeding before succumbing to his injuries in the hospital ten days later.

Following Maxwell’s 11-year manslaughter sentence, Mr. Thompson’s family paid tribute to the father of two and emphasized the importance of watching the distressing footage of the incident.

Luke’s sister Denise explained their decision to release the footage, stating, “We have authorized its release to highlight the dangers of a single punch resulting in death, with the hope of preventing such tragedies from befalling other families.”

Maxwell, a 28-year-old bouncer, was found guilty of manslaughter after the incident in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, on November 19, 2023. Despite claiming self-defense, he received a sentence of 13 years and 10 months at Leeds Crown Court.

The CCTV footage of Mr. Thompson’s final moments, shown during the trial, has been made public by his family to raise awareness. The video captures the fatal encounter between Mr. Thompson and Maxwell, ultimately leading to the tragic outcome.

Judge Robin Mairs, during Maxwell’s sentencing, condemned his callous actions of leaving Mr. Thompson after the assault, highlighting the malicious intent behind the attack. He emphasized that Mr. Thompson posed no threat and was subjected to unnecessary violence.

At the time of the fatal incident, Luke was anticipating the birth of his third child, born on Christmas Day shortly after his untimely death.

In her victim impact statement, Luke’s mother Michelle expressed the lasting pain and void left by his absence, affecting the family profoundly and permanently.

Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle of West Yorkshire Police, reflecting on the case, urged individuals to reconsider their actions during nights out, emphasizing the potential life-altering consequences of split-second decisions fueled by alcohol or confrontation.

The sentencing also addressed Maxwell’s involvement in drug offenses, where he admitted possession of illegal substances with intent to distribute, earning him the label of a “street-level dealer.”

As the family continues to cope with their loss, the hope remains that Maxwell’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the devastating ripple effects of impulsive actions leading to tragic outcomes.
